Mazda reveals Skyactiv engine plant plans

MazdaSkyActivGEngine_thumb In a clear indication of its new fuel efficient focus, Japanese carmaker Mazda has revealed its plans to convert a plant currently used to make engine parts for commercial vehicles, into a plant for its Skyactiv fuel efficient engines (pictured).

According to a report in Japanese business daily The Nikkei, Mazda’s decision to exit the commercial vehicle business has been followed by its renewed focus on low fuel consumption engines – with current production unable to keep up with demand.

It sees low fuel consumption with its Skyactiv engines as the key to expanding its car sales and now it hopes to develop more engines using the technology. It is expected to spend $368million on expanding engine assembly lines at its main plant in Hiroshima, and doubling capacity to more than 800,000 units a year.
